FAQ 4: How can I purchase timeshare?

You are able to purchase timeshare in a number of ways and doing your homework could save you money so it is worth shopping around. First of all, decide whether you want to buy a week (and then what time of year) or timeshare points. You can buy these from:

  • Directly from a timeshare developer
  • From a timeshare resale company
  • Privately just like purchasing any other product

When purchasing from a developer, the prospective buyer will normally attend a presentation or a short break to sample the product before committing.  Under new regulations introduced in 2011, consumers have a mandatory cooling-off period of 14 days during which no money may be taken by the developer.

Resale companies offer weeks and points on behalf of a current owner who is wishing to sell their timeshare product.  Using a resale company is often a way to pick up a cheaper week or bargain.

When purchasing from an individual, maybe through an auction site like e-Bay or through an advertisement, it is important to verify their legal right to the timeshare asset. Check also that there are no outstanding maintenance fees that may have led to the right-of-use being withdrawn or cancelled or outstanding finance.  Please check this carefully before purchasing.

As timeshare is a long-term holiday acquisition it is important that consumers purchase a product that will meet their evolving requirements over a period of time and not just to meet a short-term requirement.

It is important that consumers look carefully at the details of the product which will be described in documents often called the “constitution”, “articles” or “scheme regulations”.

They should purchase a product they will be happy to use over the lifespan of the product and purchase it from a reputable developer or resale company, or after thorough checking/verification from other sources.
